Spotting was applied directly to original glass plates and negatives. No forgiveness for the retoucher for errors .
Historical restoration enhances the appearance of an image within the parameters created by the photographer. High resolution scans are made from analog negatives or prints, the digital copies are retouched/edited to remove the technical flaws made during exposure, development, and printing. Restoring a digital copy repairs damage from neglect and aging to original films and prints.
